Beware of a new scam called virtual kidnapping, a terrifying hoax that relies on deception and technology to trick unsuspecting victims into paying a ransom.  According to the FBI, this coercion scheme extorts ransom payments from victims who are tricked into believing that a loved one has been kidnapped or is in imminent danger.  This occurs through “spoofing” which is when a caller deliberately falsifies information transmitted to your caller ID, disguising their true identity and making it appear as if the call is coming from someone else.  Scammers go as far as using stolen contact lists and troll the internet to find personal contact information about you and your family through social media and online search tools.  Scam artist pressure their victims into acting quickly before the hoax can be discovered.
